Jim lifted his eyes from the book, his blood turning cold as he heard the words come from the potions teacher's lips as if taunting him. "Get with a partner," Slughorn repeated, looking intensely at Jim. Jim was a smart kid and an ace student, but he never excelled at potion making as he did with other magical studies. Potion making sort of resisted him. He gulped and looked desperately around the room for an Ravenclaw that might pair with him, but had no such luck. Worry flooded into his eyes as the only open partner appeared in front of him, at a table. He slowly closed his book and picked it up, walking sheepishly over to the table, aware of everyone's eyes on the back of his head, looking down at the Slytherin."D-do you mind?" he asked, gesturing to the seat next to her, hoping she wasn't too abrasive. "I need a partner and well..." he looked around at all the other students looking at him. "No one likes me," he said, bringing his tone lower as to not be heard. He hoped she wasn't judgmental, but he knew that was probably hopeless to think about because all Slytherins despised the weak, and he came off at first glance as just that.

Kacey April Lawrence

Kacey was completely involved involved in her Potions book that she hardly even heard Slughorn announce to get with a partner. Usually it wasn't his sort of thing. He usually stuck with solo activities. But, fine. She's work with a partner just fine. She wouldn't have any problems with it as long as she partnered with another Slytherin... her thoughts stopped as she realized that there wasn't a single Slytherin in her class at all. Kacey let out a soft, "Oh," in dissappointment. She shrugged it off and assumed that Slughorn would let her work solo. Afterall, Potions was her best class.

In a few moments, a boy approached her table asking to be partners with her. She glanced up, her eyes finding his face and she was struck with the fact that she'd seen him before... but where? She nodded to his proposal of working together. Kacey didn't mind it, as long as he knew what he was doing.. er, at least he sort of knew what he was doing. Professor Slughorn clapped his hands for attention and announced the Potion that they were all making but Kacey missed it because of the boy's annoucement of not having friends. Suddenly, her heart went out to him, even though he was of a different house. "Well, hi. Howareya? I'm Kacey. Slytherin," she stated briefly, looking up and meeting his eyes for the first time.

And that's when it hit her. He was the boy from the field. And he was really good looking. 'No, no, no. Don't even go there, Kace,' she told herself stubbornly.

Jim felt a bit relieved that she didn't totally reject him as a partner, though she did seem like she would talk a lot. "I'm Jim, Ravenclaw, but...look, I'm dead awful at potions so feel free to blame me when we blow up the dungeons mkay?" he said, taking the seat next to the girl- Kacey, she said. He set his book on the table and everyone began to brew. He flipped through the pages in his book until he found the recipe. "I have no idea how to brew this 'Draught of Living Death',"he frowned, looking at the complicated instructions. Oh god, he could see himself failing all ready and Kacey yelling at him for getting bad marks. He sighed, standing up again and getting the jars of ingredients set out on their table, just wanting to get this over with.
He glanced at Kacey, wondering if she was any good at potion making. Surely she couldn't be worse than him. Potions were like divination. Stupid. He picked out some weird looking beans that apparently crawl (OOC:dgjklabgjkeradb). The instructions said to slice them. Seemed easy enough, right? He grabbed the silver knife and laid it on top of the bean and pushed down, but it slipped on the shell and the bean was propelled forward, flying out the classroom door.

Kacey watched him move for a second. Poor thing didn't seem like he knew a thing about potions and would probably end up completely failing the class this year. Kacey sighed and took the knife from his hand, her hand grazing his skin. "No, no. Crush it. The slicing never works." She said, pressing the blunt side of knife down on the bean, squeezing the juice out. "See? Okay, now for the rest of the stuff. We need wormwood, asphodel, valerian roots, sloth brain, and..." she checked the items off on her hand, using her fingers to count. She was just rattling them off from her brain. It was obvious that Kacey had made this potion before. She glanced down at her book, "oh, and sopophorous bean, but we already have that." Kacey rolled up her sleeves on her robe, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear while she was at it.

Kacey strolled over to get the ingreidients, coming back quickly with a determined and slightly cocky expression on her face. "Okay, let's just get started, shall we?" She asked, her Irish accent differentiating from his own accent. A few minutes later, Kacey had all the ingreidents prepared and she began adding things, that seemed almost ranom, however she just knew what she was doing. "Would you hand me the Valerian roots?" She asked, not taking her eyes off the black, currant-colored liquid in the cauldron.

It made him feel unintelligent and he couldn't stand that. He furrowed his eyebrows, and began to think, like he did when there was an indescribably hard problem on an O.W.L or something. Usually if he concentrated he could get it. Jim removed his robe, the heat from the cauldrons making the room temperature all together high.

Usually if he concentrated he could get it. Jim removed his robe, leaving only his white dress shirt and tie, the heat from the cauldrons making the room temperature all together high. He examined the book's instructions, wondering why it would say to cut if you clearly needed to smash it. He heard Kacey ask for roots. He examined the ingredients, picking up what he assumed to be the ingredient since it was the only root on the table. "Do you need it to be chopped up?" he asked her, not wanting to just stand by without anything to do. She seemed to be working like she had done this a million times and he was sort of just...standing there.

"What? Oh, no, I'll do it," she insisted, grabbing the roots from his hand, their skin touching again. She wasn't going to lie, she felt a bit of an electric tingle when their skin touched. However, she did ignore as it as a bit of a blush spread across her cheeks. Kacey just needed to focus because this was Potions class. And her favorite class. For a moment, she wished Professor Snape was still here because he would've booted half of the class out the door by now. Not that she didn't have any faith in her partner, but it was just that... well, she felt bad for him. Kacey reached into the cauldron, sprinkling the last ingredient in and the potion turned a light shade of lilac.

Slughorn picked that moment to walk by and he gave Kacey a wonderful beam. "Excellent, excellent," he murmured, his eyes on the cauldron. Kacey gave a brief smile, not looking up from her work. Their. Their work. She kept forgetting that it was a partner thing and not just a solo thing. For a moment, Kacey just stood there and watched the potion turn from a lilac color. slowly to a clear liquid, resembling water. She glanced into Jim's book, her eyes skimming over the directions briefly, before she just stuck her stirring spoon into the pot. She gave it seven stirs counterclockwise, and then once clockwise for good measure. Kacey gave a smile up at Slughorn as she raised her hand, "Done." Was all she said.

Slughorn beamed again. "That's a new record, Miss Lawrence!" Kacey shot a glance at Jim, who stood beside her.

Jim's skin tingled once again and he put his hands behind his back after giving her the roots. He watched her brew the potion confidently. Maybe that's all that he lacked. Confidence. He watched her stir the cauldron, and wondered why she wouldn't even let him do that. Was she scared he would mess up the whole potion?? It was only a few simple stirs, it couldn't possible be too hard. Then again, he did mess up on chopping the beans. He looked up as Kacey announced they were finished. That was seriously quick. Slughorn shot a glance at Jim and he couldn't discern the emotion on his face, though it was most likely disapproval. Jim broke eye contact, quickly looking at the ground as his face turned bright red from embarrassment of failure. Honestly, it wasn't completely his fault. He had offered to help, so at least he didn't sit there like a rock. More like...he stood there like a rock.

Kacey looked away from Slughorn's gaze and down at the cauldron on the table. She had felt sort of bad for Jim. She hadn't meant to steal the spotlight away from. She'd just known what to do. Maybe she should've encouraged him a little bit more or let him help a little bit more. "I-I'm sorry you didn't get to help," she said quietly, avoiding eye contact with Jim. "I would've let you except I just wanted to finish the stupid potion quickly, sorry." She apologized glancing upwards briefly. "Look, I-" She started, but the bell to change classes cut her off. Her eyes flickered around the classroom, trying to think of something but nothing came to her and she just sighed.

Kacey grabbed the sleeve of Jim's robe and pulled him out of the classroom, "Look, I really am sorry and I'd like to make it up to you because you seemed.. " Kacey searched for the right word. "Distraught."
